Analysis of new fuel pattern in new ship orders

Clarkson data show that from January to September 2023, the global shipbuilding industry undertook a total of 1,356 new ship orders, 79.282 million deadweight tons, of which a total of 139 LNG-fueled ships, 13.503 million deadweight tons; There were 109 ships fueled by methanol, with 11.081 million deadweight tons, and the proportion of LNG and methanol fuel increased, especially in container ships and PCC ships, which exceeded the proportion of traditional fuels.

From the perspective of ship type, the proportion of new fuel used in container ship orders is larger, methanol fuel orders reached 78, 9.647 million deadweight tons, accounting for 56.9%, LNG fuel orders have 27, 4.44 million deadweight tons, accounting for 26.2%. PCC orders for LNG fuel reached 33 ships with 698,000 deadweight tons, accounting for 53.5%, and methanol fuel had 2 ships. LNG carriers can all use LNG fuel; LPG carriers are dominated by LPG fuel (51.7%) and ethane fuel (33.6%). Crude oil carriers mainly use traditional fuel IFO 380, accounting for 50.8%, of course, there are also 32.8% of ships can use LNG fuel; Bulk carriers and oil product carriers are dominated by traditional fuels VLS IFO and IFO 380, accounting for 96.9% and 93.2% respectively.
